How to Increase Your Metabolism

It is one of the unfair facts of life that some people have naturally faster metabolisms than others. This doesn't mean that you can't help to speed it up though! Amazing news right?

Five ways to increase your metabolism naturally

Find out how you can boost your metabolism naturally and speed up your weight loss

Eat Breakfast

I cannot stress how important eating breakfast is! While there's definitely can be benefits to working out on an empty stomach in the morning, if you do not get around to eating breakfast everyday your body goes into starvation mode because you have not eaten the entire time you have been asleep. This causes your metabolism to slow down because it is trying to conserve energy.

When picking something to eat for breakfast choose foods that are substantial and going to fill you up for a long time and give you plenty of energy for the day ahead. Complex carbs such as wholemeal bread, protein such as eggs and healthy fats like avocados are all great choices for healthy breakfast ideas. You can also add veggies in for added fibre and goodness to help keep you fuller for longer.

One of my all time favourite breakfasts is an egg white omelette filled with capsicum, spinach and tomato served on wholemeal bread. On other days I like to eat poached eggs on wholemeal toast served with spinach and avocado.

Pick Protein

Protein has a high thermogenic effect, meaning you can burn about 30% of the calories the food contains during digestion. Protein is also made up of mainly amnio acids which are harder for your body to break down in comparison to fat and carbs. This doesn’t mean you have to live solely on a protein-based diet but you should aim to incorporate a serve of protein with each meal to keep you feeling fuller for longer. Some of my favourite sources of protein are fish, chicken breast, legumes, lean meat and nuts.

Eat Regular Meals

This is another crucial aspect to achieving a faster metabolism. I know some people get scared of this because they think, “Why would I want to eat more if I am trying to lose weight?” However, if you eat five to six smaller meals compared to three larger ones, your metabolism is constantly working and not getting slowed down. It will also prevent you from overeating because you won’t get super hungry in between meals.

Brew Green Tea

Green tea is one of the best drinks you can have to boost your metabolism. It is full of anti-oxidants and fat burning properties that also help to improve your blood flow. It is best to drink 2-3 cups of green tea a day. As summer is getting closer you could also try a green tea smoothie or having your green tea iced, keep some in the fridge at all times so you don’t forget to drink it!

Try Interval Training

This type of training is awesome because a HIIT workout can end up burning more calories in less time than your regular workout. All you have to do is step up your intensity and train in short bursts instead of going steady for the entire workout. For example, sprint for 30 seconds on a treadmill, followed by a 30 second rest. Do this for 12-15 minutes, increasing speed if needed. This will help boost your metabolism because sprinting increases your body’s ability to take up oxygen for several hours after you have worked out. This is helping replenish the body and aid in recovery, leading to metabolism of fat as oxygen uptake is increased.
